CLINICAL CYTOLOGY LABORATORY
REA Maternity Hospital has a fully equipped cytology laboratory, which undertakes the reception, preparation, treatment and evaluation of specimens covering the entire spectrum of modern cytology. The aim is to investigate the possibility of dysplastic and precancerous lesions.
More specifically the following are examined:
- Gynecological system
- Breast
- Lymph nodes
- Endocrine glands
- Fluid cavities
- Urinary system
- Respiratory system
- Gastrointestinal system
- Soft molecules
- Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
The laboratory is staffed with highly trained medical personnel and qualified technicians and is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery, dyes and reagents that fully meet the needs of both conventional cytology and liquid-based cytology.
Collaborations
The close collaboration with the Imaging Department of REA Hospital ensures the excellent preparation of materials resulting from fine- needle aspiration, while the logistics and mainly the scientific support of the Pathological Laboratory provide the possibility of applying specialized diagnostic methods, quality checks and extensive follow-ups.
Fine-Needle Aspiration
It is one of the simplest and most effective methods of diagnostic approach to any emerging palpable or ultrasound / radiographically located tumor/ozone, with very good rates of specificity and sensitivity in finding pathological data. It has no side effects, it lasts only a few seconds, and the irritation it may cause is minimal. The presence of the cytologist during collection ensures the adequacy of the material so as to minimize the likelihood of the patient receiving a non-diagnostic result.
Exam results
The smears are examined by specialized doctors. Results are given to the attending physician, in consultation with the department secretary.
