Menopause
Menopause is characterized by a woman's last normal menstruation. Before menopause, women usually go through a period of hormonal disorders and disordered menstruation cycles referred to as climacteric. The average age of menopause in the European countries is 51 years and does not seem to be changing over time. Greek women now have an average lifespan of 82 years and are therefore expected to spend 1/3 of their life in menopause.
Symptoms
During the transition into menopause, women experience symptoms due to the decrease of estrogens levels and the aging process. This is why women should be aware of the impact menopause will have on their health as well as recognize the ways that will help them prevent or deal with these effects.
The main effects include:
- hot flashes
- night sweats
- sleep disorders
- sexual aversion and desire disorders
- psycho-emotional instability
- urogenital atrophy
- skin atrophy
- bone loss-osteoporosis and
- increased risk of cardiovascular disease
Postmenopausal osteoporosis is due to an increase in the rate of bone loss.
Hormonal therapy is the treatment of choice for the treatment of menopausal symptoms and urogenital atrophy. Symptoms include hot flushes, sweating, sleeping disorders, arthralgia, myalgia, depression and vaginal dryness.
Clinical evaluation-Control
The detailed history is the key element in the early stages of evaluation of a woman. It includes lifestyle parameters, medical, gynecological and obstetrical history. Clinical examination follows, with particular attention to the presence of obesity, abdominal obesity in particular and hypertension.
The examination of women during menopause includes a set of tests for properly evaluating their condition. Generally, the following must be carried out: gynecological ultrasound or other types of endometrial imaging bone density assessment and risk of osteoporotic fracture, breast cancer screening and cardiovascular risk and metabolic syndrome screening.
Treatment
The presence of menopause symptoms can degrade women's quality of life. For women who present symptoms, we can provide a better quality of life with hormonal therapy, as well as prevent osteoporosis and urogenital system atrophy.
